They aren’t words you hear very often: an Ang Lee comedy.
He hasn’t really made one since he directed “The Wedding Banquet” and “Eat Drink Man Woman” back-to-back in 1993 and 1994. …
“To bring to life one of the most popular movie musicals ever, involves not only mounting a huge Broadway musical, but also incorporating the use of special effects, an actual rainstorm on our stage with choreography, and the interworking of multiple film sequences projected alongside live action,” said Executive Artistic Director Bradford Kenney.
Imagine a combination of Suzanne Vega and Norah Jones making dark explorations of the heart and you’re getting close to Swedish songstress Ternheim, who has delivered a haunting, gorgeous album with “Leaving On A Mayday.” Utilizing American musicians, including Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, Ternheim has created the perfect foundations for her rich, floating alto that fills her songs of love and longing with captivating emotion.
There’s nothing raucous on the record. But the pulsating, synthesized drive of the title cut gives the album some propulsion, while strings and tympani-like drums make songs like “Terrified” and “My Heart Still Beats For You” spare, rich and moving. Ternheim already won Swedish Grammys for female singer and album of the year for “Leaving On A Mayday.” It’s that good.
