Don White brings storytelling to Tupelo

You’ve seen comedy shows before, and you’ve been to concerts before. But when was the last time you saw them both in one night, at the same time? Sounds unlikely right? That’s because you haven’t met Don White.
As a standup comic, singer and storyteller, White is quite a unique performer. In addition to being a folk singer, in the late ‘90s he kick started his career as a comic, performing in comedy clubs and keeping his audience laughing. That’s when he decided that just being funny wasn’t good enough.
“I decided not to stick just to comedy because I wanted to be not funny sometimes,” says White, “There’s some serious stuff in my shows, too, that I want to bring up with my audience.”
White gets much of his material from his own life, which will seem pleasantly familiar to audiences. Teenagers and parenting are just a few of the topics he touches on. He fits these topics into the comedy and music genres, and also into his own special brand of story-telling.
“I’ve always felt like a storyteller, even as a little kid,” he says, “I’ve always been fascinated by people who could engage an audience with what they were saying. When I started writing songs at age 15, they always ended up being kind of story-songs.”
Sound good so far? What’s even better is that White is coming to Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry on Saturday, Jan. 30, and he’s not coming alone. Opening for White will be The Loomers, who participate in only about six shows a year with White.
“It’s going to be a very special show,” White says, “The Loomers are just a great band. They’re a group of friends I’ve been performing with for years now, and I know the show is going to be terrific.”
