DOVER — Who makes the best pizza can become a subject of hot debate among friends, families and food critics.
Some people love the simple tomato-and-cheese pies from the pizza parlor they’ve been frequenting for decades, while others seek out newer venues offering exotic toppings or specialty crusts.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, pizza aficionados of all ages can cast their votes for best regional pizza restaurants at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire’s first annual Pizzafest and Holiday Auction. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of N.H. in Dover. Those who attend will be able to sample pizza from local restaurants, then vote for their favorites. A panel of judges will also be involved in the tasting.

Seacoast area pizza restaurants will provide cheese and specialty pizzas for guests to sample and judge in the categories of “Kids’ Choice Cheese” and “Grown-Ups’ Choice.” The museum’s judging panel will crown picks for “Best Pizza,” “Best Crust” and “Most Creative Toppings.”

As of press time, participating establishments were Dover House of Pizza, Flatbread Company, Joe’s New York Pizza, Kendall Pond II, Roger’s Pizza House, River Bend Pizza and Subs, and Smiley’s.

“Since opening in our new location in downtown Dover last year, the museum has greatly expanded its audience, programming and exhibit space,” said Jane Bard, Associate director of the Children’s Museum. “Such tremendous growth in all areas of operations has stretched the museum’s limited resources and makes funds raised by our Pizzafest and Holiday Auction even more essential.”

The event’s Silent Auction will feature dozens of great holiday gift ideas. Items up for bid include gift certificates to restaurants and statewide attractions, unique experiences such as a deep sea fishing excursion, sports tickets, merchandise and gift baskets. All items will be up for bid at the event.

Admission to the Children’s Museum First Annual Pizzafest and Holiday Auction is $10 per person, and children age 2 and younger are free. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 742-2002 during regular weekday business hours.
